Insight into Navy life - Jan 07

On Saturday 13th January a group of 211 (Newbury) Cadets and their adult instructors travelled to Gosport to visit the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and EXPLOSION - the Naval Firepower Museum.

The Submarine Museum provided the cadets with an insight into life on a Cold War Diesel/Electric submarine, HMS Alliance, the tour being conducted by a well informed tour guide. Cadets also had the opportunity to view Holland, the Royal Navy's first submarine, in addition to many of the armaments carried aboard past and present RN submarines.

The second visit of the day was to EXPLOSION, the Naval Firepower Museum, located at Priddy's Hard, Gosport, the Royal Navy's former armaments depot.
Exhibits on display included, small firearms through to missles, torpedos and "big" guns, in addition to an audio-visual presentation on the history of the site.

These museum visits, whilst not a core activity of the ATC, do provide cadets with an insight into the history and heritage of all of the UK's armed forces. Previous museum visits over the last 12 months have included, the Royal Marines Museum (Portsmouth) and the D-Day Museum (Portsmouth), whilst future visits are planned to Bovington Tank Museum, the RAF Museum at Cosford, the National Army Museum (London) and the Historic Dockyard (Portsmouth).
