Cadets enjoy airshow - July 06

On Saturday, 15th July, 13 cadets from 211 Newbury Squadron attended the first day of RIAT, the Royal International Air Tattoo, at RAF Fairford, near Swindon, along with trip organisers Civilian Instructors Tim Burgess and Stephen Robinson.

All members of the party were witness to some stunning flying displays throughout the day, most notably the Mig-29 Fulcrum, which certainly caused a few talking points! (“It’s defying the laws of gravity I swear, doing those back flips!").

Alongside the flying activities, the cadets could also experience a SAT Range, courtesy of the RAF regiment, where normal live firing weapons, converted to fire laser beams are used with a video of a combat situation, and rather like a game, users are required to fire their allotted rounds at a series of targets, with scores available at the end.

Despite a very early start and a very long hot day, spirits were high, probably infused by the proximity of so many aircraft and the variety of stalls and stands available to see for all. Highlights of the day included one of the Canberra’s last flights, a marvellous display by the Red Arrows and a fly past from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight.
