June 08 - My Time as a Junior Cadet

My time as a Junior Cadet - Cdt Omar

I joined the Air Training Corps on the 2nd January 2008. I was enrolled by the Squadron Padre, Rev Dr David Stone; I said the cadets promise and was given by RAF Form 3822 – my record of service book. This article is about the 3 months leading up to that day.

Junior Cadet training must be completed by every member of the Squadron before they enroll. It takes around 3 months to earn by blue beret and I was taught about the history of the Air Training Corps, the Royal Air Force and the History of Flight. We also learned information about the cadets on the squadron, the Squadron Staff and the History of 211 (Newbury) Squadron, as well as doing foot drill and learning to march.

The training can be quite tough but our instructors always try there hardest to make it fun and interesting – running quizzes, team games and being as practical as possible! During this time I made many friends and learnt a lot of useful information.

Since I became a cadet, I am eligible to compete in many different activities. I have been flying at RAF Benson in a Grob Tutor twice, and have been gliding at 612 Volunteer Gliding Squadron 3 times – on each occasion taking control of the aircraft and flying it for a period of time. I have also become qualified to shoot the No 8 Target Rifle and am looking forward to gaining my squadron marksman.

My future looks bright as a member of 211 (Newbury) Squadron!
