Marksmanship

Newbury Cadets have the opportunity of firing a variety of rifles on firing ranges.

The No. 8

Initially cadets learn on the Lee Enfield No. 8 .22 rifle. Here they learn about Weapons Safety, Weapons handling and learn and develop their marksmanship principles.

L98 CGP

Once they have qualified on the No. 8, and they are over the age of 14, they are introduced to the L98-A1 CGP, a manually operated variant of the 5.56 mm SA80. Training for this focuses on safety & weapons handling.

The No. 81

The 7.62 mm Parker Hale L81A2 Cadet Target Rifle is also used at long ranges for competition shooting. This is an ideal rifle to develop marksmanship skills and training focusses on improving the skill and accuracy of the shooter.

Shooting Competitions

There are many competitions, from postal smallbore competitions to the yearly Inter-Service Cadet Rifle Meet at Bisley, the home of UK shooting. Newbury cadets regularly compete against each other in interflight shoulder to shoulder shoots, as well as cadets from the Wing. This year we have progressed to shoot against cadets across the Corps - and across all 3 services - at Bisley''s ISCRM.

Safety

Safety is paramount with all ATC activities and shooting is certainly no exception. Training is an integral part of the system and each cadet is fully trained in whichever rifle they will be using. They do this via Dry Training. They are also tested on their competance with the rifle using a WHT. Supervising staff are similarly trained to deal with any eventualities and to ensure that the range is run safely and efficiently.
